One of the most important aspects of a goat herd is the farm they are raised. 2020 has been dedicated to developing Dragon Mountain Farm to become a sustainable, long term home for BC Timber Goats. Dragon Mountain Farm, located on the banks of the Quesnel River, offers hay and pasture for goats, while providing market garden and forest opportunities. For these reasons, BC Timber Goats is expanding into Haskap Berry and Charcoal/Biochar Production.
Haskap Berries are an innovative Canadian product, developed at the University of Saskatchewan. Haskap Berries are native to the Boreal Forest Climate and have been gathered from all over Canada, Russia, Poland and Japan to create superior commercial varieties that can thrive in our cold climate. Haskap Berries are early fruiters with the harvest beginning in early July. At Dragon Mountain farm we’ve planted Smart Berry Blue, Aurora, Boreal Blizard, Boreal Beauty and Boreal Beast. We have these same varieties, transplanted into 5.5” pots available for sale so please call or email if you would like to plant some of these Haskap varieties for yourself!
One of the earliest forest products, charcoal has been produced for millennia as a fuel source and when incorporated into the soil is known as biochar and is an incredible soil amendment. Biochar captures carbon from decomposing wood and stores it for the long term in the soil effectively taking it out of the global carbon cycle. Biochar stores nutrients and water in soil and has applications in both livestock and horticulture!
BC Timber Goats respectfully acknowledges it is located on the unceded traditional territory of Wei Wai Kum Kwiakah and K'ómoks First Nation First Nations.
